Spiny-backed Orbweaver? | Gasteracantha cancriformis (Araneidae)
« on: Wed, 29 March 2017, 10:20:20 AM »
I found this spider at Brownsberg, Suriname, February '17. I named it Spiny-backed Orbweaver, Gasteracantha cancriformis, because it looks exactly like this species that I recognized from the Gambia, West-Africa. No idea if this species is also on this side of the big pond?

Any thoughts appreciated!

Kind regards,
Klaas

Hello Klaas,

I've not yet spotted this species in Suriname myself, but I agree that this is apparently a Gasteracantha cancriformis. The various species of spiny spiders you usually find in Suriname belong mostly to the genus Micrathena, which makes this one extra nice.
