Easy piecy beetle? | Canthon triangularis (Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae)
« on: Mon, 26 February 2018, 11:49:47 AM »
Hi Auke,
This one looks a lot like your avatar? Maybe you know the name to it? I found it in the tiki-tiki-bushy near Zanderij, February 10th, 2018.
Thanx!
Klaas

Easy peasy indeed! ;D Like my avatar, this is a Canthon triangularis (Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae: Deltochilini). They usually have one or more spots of varying size on their pronotum, but this one goes without. This species can be found in primary forest as well as in a suburban setting, and is attrackted to both excrements and small cadavers. Your specimen is probably quite old, as it is missing the tarsi of at least two legs.

Cheers, Auke

Oh, and is this the same species? I found it on Brownsberg, last February 15th. The shape is kind of the same, but it's missing the nice colours...

Thanx,

Same family (Scarabaeidae), subfamily (Scarabaeinae) and tribe (Deltochilini), but a different genus. This species is smaller than the previous one and is named Canthon (Trichocanthon) sordidus. Both species are diurnal, quite common and especially attracted to excrements. They're perching on leaves in the understory of the forest in the hope to smell some delicious fresh poo. 8)
