Unknown snake
« on: Wed, 07 March 2018, 08:21:11 PM »
This little snake was curling up and then jumping over the path near Fred's Zintete Camp, a few times very quickly after another. Then, fortunately, it stayed still for a while, so I could make these pictures. Any ID?

Thanx,
Klaas

PS. oops, sorry, I accidentally posted it in the wrong category. I can't move it myself, can I, Auke? Sorry... Please move to reptiles...

Hi Olivier,

Thanx! That does look a lot alike. I did, however, not notice the orange belly, although it did jump a few times over the path... It all went kind of fast, I couldn't say it didn't have an orange belly...

Thanx!

The eyes of P. plicatilis are placed extremely far to the front of the head, and I don't see that in this specimen. Klaas, could you provide the highest possible resolution of the head as shown in the first photo? For the moment, I put my money on Taeniophallus brevirostris. Location and time of activity also comply with this small species.

Cheers, Auke

Thank you, Auke, this is the best I can get, I'm afraid...

Yes, eye placement does exclude P. plicatilis. I'm not fully convinced of my own suggestion though. Let's see what the experts can contribute.

Best, Auke

Looks like one of the (near)legless lizards. Bachia genus perhaps?

Of course! I knew something was off... Dimitri is right, this is a lizard with extremely reduced legs of the genus Bachia. The only Bachia known from the three Guianas is B. flavescens (previously B. cophias), so that must be it. Nice find!
