Strange hairy moth (Arctiidae?) | Melittia sp. (Sesiidae: Sesiinae)
« on: Tue, 05 August 2014, 01:38:42 PM »
I found this moth last March on the Brownsberg where it was attrackted to my light installation (I was collecting with permission of Stinasu). I estimate its length at about 2cm. Does anyone know which species (or at least family) it is? I've not been able to find it on the internet so far.

Thanks,

Auke

Yes. What else could it be? ???

By the way, I think the hairs are on the hind legs, NOT on the body or wings.

This specimen has the building of a Sesiidae. But I am not certain. The antennae are not shaped as in Arctiidae.

@ Cees Gielis:

Thank you! I had a new look on the internet and found that species of the genus Melittia (Sesiidae: Sesiinae: Melittiini) look a lot like it. It's a genus with over a hundred species and my specimen lost lots of hair on the thorax, so I guess it will be difficult to get down to species level.

Hi,

It looks like a lot to Melittia brabanti (Le Cerf, 1917)

Best regards
